MDC Council Of Elders To Determine MP, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga’s Future

THE Welshman Ncube led MDC has tasked its Council of Elders to consider if the party must heed growing calls for the ouster of its under fire MP, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga.

The former regional integration minister and, now, Matebeleland South proportional representation MP, is in the eye of the storm for allegedly fanning divisions in the party.

MDC youths, backed by party women, have in the past few days upped the campaign for the firebrand legislator to be withdrawn from parliament insisting she no longer represented the interests of the party.

But in an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, MDC spokesperson Kurauone
Chihwayi said a council of elders has been tasked to show the way forward.

“The organ has been tasked by the presidency to gather facts and make constructive recommendations regarding allegations raised by the youths and the women of the MDC,” Chihwayi said.

The MDC spokesperson said the party will not summarily withdraw the embattled MP despite coming under pressure from party loyalists to have her recalled from the house.

“We cannot rush to disciplinary action against the Cde since all will depend on the recommendations of the council of elders,” he said.

“The MDC is a democratic party and believes in wide and thorough consultations before taking or recommending disciplinary action against a member of the party.

“The former secretary general of the party will obviously be approached and given an opportunity to clarify issues that have been raised by the two assemblies.”

The MDC council of elders is composed of at least three and not more than 12 senior members of the party whose chairperson is elected by congress.

It is an influential party organ that advises the MDC national council, national executive, national standing committee and the presidency when the need arises.

The past few months have turned too unbearable for Misihairabwi-Mushonga who was early this year forced to give up her post as party secretary general.

Agitated party members were accusing her of pursuing an ambitious underground campaign to land the position of secretary general in the long delayed merger with another MDC splinter group led by Tendai Biti.

If she had her way as was being alleged, that would have meant her President, Ncube, would have automatically surrendered his own pursuit for presidency as per arrangement. source-Newzimbabwe
